We quickly became friends and now, whenever I’m especially puzzled or fascinated by something I’m reading or by events in the world or in my private life, I rush to the phone and call Francine for clarification. When I met Francine Prose, she was perfectly familiar to me from her penetrating, complex and hilarious fiction which I admired greatly. Some writers are plausible as the authors of their work and some are not. Prose lives in upstate New York with her husband, artist Howie Michels and their children, Bruno and Leon. The movie, Household Saints, directed by Nancy Savoca and based on one of Prose’s ten books of fiction was released in September to tumultuous reviews. The Peaceable Kingdom, Francine Prose’s second collection of short stories, has just been published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
